Rocket science for publishers and marketers

Digital publishing used to be simpler. Today there’s more of everything — more audiences and more opportunity, but also more media types and devices. More features and functionality, faster cycles and higher volume. And more competition, too.

You need publishing technology that doesn’t just keep pace, but sets it. Daylife’s patented technologies make it happen.

Technology Overview

Daylife technology powers two major components of our product offering: the Daylife Content Cloud and the Daylife Publisher Suite. A key feature of both of these is the Daylife API.

Daylife Content Cloud

  • Patented algorithms enable the ingestion, analysis, and processing of any media type published on the Web.
  • Once the semantic analysis has been completed, the system adds layers of rich metadata and intelligence to each piece of media, making it queryable and finding relationships between millions of individual pieces. This lets related items automatically find each other within your application.
  • Currently, the Daylife Content Cloud crawls thousands of sources of original content. Third-party content is provided to publishers under fair-use standards, while proprietary content is delivered to publishers as required.

Daylife Publisher Suite

  • The Publisher Suite works alongside any CMS, streamlining workflow.
  • A browser-based dashboard lets publishers or marketing organizations curate media simply and easily from the Daylife Content Cloud.
  • The Publisher Suite also includes a selection of dozens of pre-formatted Content Apps (e.g., photo galleries and related headlines modules) that can be published via simple drag-and-drop onto any existing Web page, or even be used to compose entire microsites.
  • The Publisher Suite Dashboard also includes an analytics panel to help publishers understand how their Content Apps are performing.
  • When published, Daylife Content Apps increase content recirculation, time on page metrics, page views per visit, and user engagement.

Daylife API

  • Offered as a standard part of the Publisher Suite, the Daylife API is a powerful set of pipes that delivers constantly-updating, intelligently-enhanced media from thousands of high quality fair-use Web sources. It can also deliver a publisher’s or marketer’s own proprietary content in whatever way needed.
  • The API is robust and flexible: it handles over 1.5 billion calls per month, and is RESTful, fully customizable, and has no hidden integration costs.
  • Publishers and marketers use the Daylife API to build custom content experiences that draw from the Daylife Content Cloud in whichever ways they wish.
  • The Daylife API can also be used to deliver a publisher’s or marketer’s own content across a conglomerate organization or to third-party sources, effectively creating a custom API for their use.

Daylife Publisher Suite – The Full Story

The Daylife Publisher Suite is a comprehensive solution, designed for traditional, emerging, and brand publishers and marketers who want the freedom to focus on creating experiences audiences will love, and freedom from technological friction at every step. It’s on-demand media and features from the cloud, and it’s changing the way publishers work with all their digital channels.

How It Works

At the Publisher Suite’s core is a patented engine for ingesting, analyzing, and processing media from the cloud. Let’s start there.

Step 1: Our Content Cloud goes to work
It begins in our Content Cloud, which ingests all your media and performs deep analysis, normalization, and collation. We parse it eight ways from Sunday and add layers of rich metadata and intelligence, making your media queryable and finding relationships between millions of individual pieces so related items can automatically find each other later.

Everything you have access to can be ingested, whether it comes from in-house; your partners, sister sites, or from across a conglomerate; a licensing deal or third-party affiliates; subscription or wire media; and even your own personal uploads. It’s all blended, processed, and delivered back to you with tons of value and intelligence added.

Meanwhile, we also ingest and analyze media from thousands of curated fair-use sources. We crawl the Web like Google does, but with a tight focus on sites that are high-value, newsworthy, and frequently updated. Each source is individually weighted by reputation, publishing frequency, relevance, and other factors. This is designed so the Content Cloud can serve as an engine for finding out what’s going on and what really matters in the world right now. Unlike Google, we don’t try to index every last person on Earth with a blog. We only monitor media that help create a real-time view of the world for publishers. This enables us to, say, identify the key pull quote from a major story, identify trending topics within specific niches, create browseable timelines for individual topics or themes, and much more.

Throughout this process, our technological focus is on speed, accuracy, and quality of analysis. The Publisher Suite is a ready toolkit that helps editors and marketers do their jobs, better understand the media universe around them, curate that universe, and even correct any information that may not be quite right.

Our perspective and analytics are unlike anyone else’s. We go deeper than the page contents to understand things as events and stories, seeking out the links between those stories and all the topics and themes they comprise. It all gives Daylife — and our clients — a unique perspective.

Step 2: Delivery from the cloud to you
After all the analysis, parsing and the like, we deliver all that media and intelligence directly to you. There are two main methods for accessing it: the Dashboard and APIs.

The Publisher Suite Dashboard is a single interface for accessing all of that smoothed-out, smartened-up, cross-referenced media, so you can use it to create, customize, and deploy Daylife Publisher Suite Content Apps. It also gives you analytics and tight control over the media that appears in each Content App as they’re published.

You also get full developer access to the Publisher Suite APIs. There’s a variety of these, all well-tested and serving a total of 1.5 billion calls per month. The APIs are RESTful, fully customizable, and have no hidden integration costs.

And either way, you can draw from all our fair-use media at will to supplement your own, proprietary media and content. You have absolute control over whether, where, and how this media appears in your application, and your content always has priority treatment. You can pre-select sources from our fair use index (and add your own custom sources), and all those article excerpts, thumbnail images, pull quotes, Tweets, videos, and other media will be available for your use as well.

It’s important to note that the Publisher Suite is not a CMS, nor is it trying to lock you into any specific platform or coding language or anything else. It’s specifically designed to ride on top of whatever setup you’re using in a lightweight way. The point is to make your publishing tasks as easy as possible, not to up- or cross-sell you on something later.

(That said, given the state of the average CMS we can pretty much guarantee adding Daylife to yours will make your work day a whole lot simpler.)

Step 3: Use smarter media to create stuff audiences love
From here, you and your team use the Publisher Suite to create whatever it is you were making before, minus the frustration and plus a lot of possibilities.

With the Dashboard and the Installer (a simple drag and drop browser plugin that gives you one-click access to all your existing apps — learn more here), you’re free to create and deploy Content Apps at will. No more calls to IT just to edit a page — with just a few lines of Javascript added, your site becomes a canvas. Add apps, edit them, tweak their placement, remove them… experiment all day long, collect data as you go, and turn static pages into evolving real-time hubs for whatever you want to cover. One piece of javascript to support an infinite number of Content Apps on any given page, keeping load times low and audience interaction high. It’s shockingly simple.

We have a suite of Content Apps available now with more coming all the time–our clients have a huge influence over what Content Apps we develop next. (Learn more about our apps here.)

With the API, the sky’s the limit. With the power of the Content Cloud backing it, it’s trivial for developers to combine and repackage content in a kabillion ways. Any media app they can dream up will be easier to make.
