Todd Bodine: The former Craftsman truck champion and his brakeman beat Larry Gunselman's duo — 52.20 seconds to 52.21 — to win qualifying for the fourth annual Geoff Bodine Bobsled Challenge on Saturday in Lake Placid, N.Y. "Dang!" Gunselman said. Full Article at The Seattle Times
He got me by a hundredth. We were up by 15 hundredths for a while. Sandbagger!
That's how I rode the whole run ... It's fun. To beat Larry by a hundredth, that's what racing's all about. Everybody's here having fun, but we're all competitors. We all want to beat each other. We got it done. Bragging rights for tonight.
I guess I needed about four more tenths. Todd was really fast. I went down the chicane really good the first run, and then I got so excited I forgot the rest of the track and nearly flipped. But this is so much fun. I mean, who gets to drive a bobsled?
I was racing against a fierce field of competitors ... I only had a tenth of a second lead yesterday, and anything can happen in this sport. I don't take anything for granted, and I knew I had to put down my best runs today to stay in the lead. I feel content, and I'm really happy about today's result.
We knew what we were doing - we knew Slovakia is a good team ... They were up 2-1 before the last period, but we knew we were a stronger team than them and they had a tough game [Friday].
I think my experience sliding at the elite level in skeleton will carry over. I won't be less nervous, but I think I'll be more prepared. I want to be in the mix, and to be near the top girls in World Championships.
I felt utter relief crossing the finish in the last run ... I was more nervous today than I was yesterday, and didn't sleep at all last night. When it's a timed total over four runs, it adds a different element to the game because there's no room for error.
First, we've got to keep in mind what it's for. It's a great cause ... You get a bunch of racers together, and the one thing they all want to do is win. So to come out of here with a win, I'm tickled. It's the first time. Boris has been the king, and I finally got to dethrone him.
It was a brisk morning, with temperatures in the negatives ... The Olympic Regional Development Authority and track manager Tony Carlino did an awesome job overnight preparing the ice for national championships.
It's a great feeling to have the steering connected to my hands now, not to mention that I'm sitting in a recliner
