Spanish intellectual Francisco Ayala dies aged 103

Ayala, a novelist, sociologist and one of Spain's leading scholars, died at his home in Madrid, Tuesday Nov. 3, 2009. He was 103. Ayala won many prestige prizes in Spanish letters, from the Cervantes award in 1991 to the Prince of Asturias in 1998.The Spanish Civil War of 1936-39 forced him into exile and he worked and lived in Argentina and the United States before returning to Spain.
