If we meet our goals, we won't just transform those children's lives, we will help make poverty history too. Education is a moral issue, as well as an economic one... we know what education can achieve. It's a test of our resolve
It is also very important that developing countries put education at the top of their priorities. Sometimes we are surprised to see how small a priority education is for them. This is one of the roots of the problem.
I would like to commend the UK government and the Netherlands for their effort... Not all leaders are as focussed on this issue as they should be
The UK and the Netherlands have been by far the best at meeting their promises... the UK has already given beyond its commitment.
We have one of the highest dropout rates in the industrialized world
In math and science, for example, our fourth-graders are among the top students globally. By roughly eighth grade, they're in the middle of the pack. And by the 12th grade, U.S. students are scoring generally near the bottom of all industrialized countries.
By obsolete, I don't just mean that they are broken, flawed or underfunded, though a case could be made for every one of those points. By obsolete, I mean our high schools -- even when they're working as designed -- cannot teach all our students what they need to know today.
When I compare our high schools with what I see when I'm traveling abroad, I am terrified for our work force of tomorrow.
And it will be transforming the lives of millions and millions of kids around the globe.
