German Chancellor Angela Merkel (C) is accompanied by Heinz Korte (L), vice-president of the Landvolk farmers' association, Lower Saxony's State Premier Christian Wulff (R) and farmer Johann Heumann (2nd R) as she visits a cow barn in Ritterhude, northwestern Germany, where she met representatives of dairy farmers, creameries and retailers in a dispute on falling milk prices. The farmers began mobilising when several suppliers, including the no-frills supermarket Aldi, lowered the price of milk from 55 to 48 euro cents (75 to 65 dollar cents) per litre (1.75 pints) leaving only between 20 and 25 cents per litre for farmers.
