Three municipal policemen (L, C and 3-L) are handed to the Red Cross after being held hostage by members of the Oaxaca People's Popular Assembly (APPO) at the Zaachila community, in Oaxaca State, Mexico, 06 October 2006. The policemen, along with one more, where held as hostages and questioned for two hours by the APPO but where later handed over to the Red Cross by the group as a demonstration of their goodwill for keeping an open dialogue with local authorities. The Oaxaca conflict, which began with a teachers' strike in demand of better salaries, started in May 22 but worsened in June, when police forces tried to clear barricades that have been paralizing the city and keeping some 1,3 million children out of school. The protesters, the APPO and the teachers' union, also demand the resignation of the governor of the state of Oaxaca, Ulises Ruiz, who they accuse of corruption. The sign reads "I'm commander and traitor".
