China said on July 2 it wants a diversified global monetary system as President Hu Jintao prepares to travel to the G8 summit in Italy during which the issue of a new reserve currency could be raised. China made waves in March this year when it called for ditching the US dollar as the international reserve currency to stabilise the world monetary climate, a suggestion which the International Monetary Fund later said was legitimate.
