CHALMETTE, LA - MAY 26: Olivia Hoffman places flowers on the graves of veterans at Chalmette National Cemetery May 26, 2008 in Chalmette, Louisiana. The cemetery is located just outside of New Orleans next to Chalmette Battlefield, the site of the Battle of New Orleans in 1815, the last battle ever fought between England and the United States. Over 15,000 soldiers from various wars are buried at the cemetery which opened in 1864 as a final resting place for Union soldiers who perished in Louisiana hospitals during the Civil War. First enacted to honor Union soldiers of the American Civil War, Memorial Day was expanded after World War I to commemorate any members of the American military that died while in service to their country.
