Visits of this type are seen as key in efforts to continue winning the support of the local Iraqi population. Although improved security in the region has brought some benefits such as improved trade and commerce, much of the infrastructure remains in a poor state of repair. Britain's Prime Minister Gordon Brown has indicated that the number of UK troops could be scaled down - especially as the security situation in the south of the country continues to improve.

Iraqi police and civilians examine human remains found in mass grave near Latifiyah, 20 miles (30 kilometers) south of Baghdad, Iraq, Saturday, Nov. 22, 2008. Iraqi police say they have discovered a mass grave containing the remains of at least 10 people south of Baghdad. The victims' hands were bound and they had been shot in the head, execution-style. Authorities believe the people were killed about two-years ago.

In Buturande, near Rutshuru, there are five to 10 new cases per day," the medical charity said in a statement.

Fighting in eastern Congo has displaced hundreds of thousands of civilians in recent weeks, with 386 familes taking shelter in the Don Bosco school compound.
