Israel was buoyed and Palestinians were disheartened Sunday after Secretary of U.S. State Hillary Rodham Clinton bluntly signaled that the Palestinians shouldn't hold up peace talks by demanding a freeze on Israeli settlement construction. Clinton's main aim during meetings with Israeli and Palestinian leaders on Saturday was to salvage the Obama administration's foundering Mideast peace efforts by persuading the two sides to return to talks that broke down months ago.
