Sterzel is also a retired Special Forces Operator.

In this attempt to complete the Webtel.mobi Intercontinental Challenge he covered a third of the distance before severe turbulence from a Cumulo Nimbus cloud destabilised his flight and he effected a controlled water landing. The helicopter pilots and crews from the company INAER in Spain were piloting the aircraft are some of the most experienced helicopter and Search and Rescue crews in the world and effected the rescue in under 15 minutes.
