The orchestra was co-founded by Daniel Barenboim in 1999 and is based in Sevilla, Spain, it consists of musicians from countries in the Middle East, of Egyptian, Iranian, Israeli, Jordanian, Lebanese, Palestinian, and Syrian background. The aim of the orchestra is to promote understanding between Israelis and Palestinians and encourage a peaceful solution to the Arab-Israeli conflict.
