Yoshio Matsumoto, an 88-year-old retired engineer,accompanied his grandson Andy, an incoming freshman, on the campus of Washington University, Friday, Aug. 28, 2009 in St. Louis. Soon after the Dec. 7, 1941, attack on Pearl Harbor, at the height of American resentment against Japan, Washington University agreed to accept about 30 Japanese-American students from the West Coast, sparing them from internment camps.
