Anderson said he would tackle the latter by asking police officers and firefighters to go into high schools and reach out to students as a recruitment effort. "There's a lot of smart kids in high school ... How would you like to come out of high school when you're 18 years old and make $40,000? But they have to pass the (Civil Service) test. I can't see lowering the standard to get people on the job." The police bureau could offer "ride-alongs," a practice he said was in place when he served.
