Playing a star-shaped bass and wearing star-shaped glasses, glitzy getups and platform boots, Collins became the first superstar bass-playing frontman - "the Jimi Hendrix of bass," Mallia Franklin of Parliament-Funkadelic calls him in "Unsung" - and went on to influence a new generation of artists. "If there was no Bootsy Collins ... there would be no Snoop Dogg." Not so well-known, though, is how little Bootsy really had before he seemingly had it all.
