Cheney encouraged the president to heed the advice of Gen. Stanley McChrystal, commander of the war in Afghanistan, who has recommended a troop surge there. "If President Obama really believes what he campaigned on, that Afghanistan is a necessary war ... then I don't see how he can do anything other than move aggressively to achieve victory." In Iraq, meanwhile, the former vice president cautioned that a hasty withdrawal of troops could undercut political and military achievements in the country made since the Bush administration's "bold" decision in 2007 to increase troop levels there.
