We elected Arnold Schwarzenegger governor so, why not? It's not like California is forbidden to vote Republican. I think John McCain is in many ways like Arnold Schwarzenegger because his history as a senator has been as a moderate. I think that's the kind of Republican that can get elected in California. 
When encouraged to campaign actively in California, a political professional will often say, 'I could run 10 campaigns for what it would cost to compete in California,' ... California is and remains the big enchilada of presidential electoral politics, but I see both campaigns on a sort of low-carb diet, which will keep the state out of high demand.
