The study does allow though that there is "some evidence that use of social networking serves (e.g., Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn) substitutes for some neighborhood involvement." Discussion network have shrunk by about a third since 1985 but you can hardly blame technology since people who use cell phones and the Internet are more likely to have larger and more diverse discussions networks.
