Brown spoke ahead of a two-day EU summit from Thursday which will discuss candidates for the new jobs set to be created if, as expected, the reforming Lisbon Treaty comes into force. "We have made it very clear that if this position is to be created... and if the former prime minister Tony Blair comes forward as a candidate, we would be very happy to support him" Brown said. Brown is reportedly set to argue the case for Blair, prime minister from 1997 to 2007, at the summit.
