Lord Puttnam, who has been deputy chairman of the broadcaster since 2006, says: "Mandrake was grievously misled last week in believing that I was at any time a candidate for the role. I notified Ofcom at the time of my appointment that, as my home is in Ireland, I felt it inappropriate for me to succeed Luke Johnson, who was made aware of that position and was content with it."
