And just because you play it, it doesn't mean you're a nerd, says Charles A. Smith of Magic City Chess U, who, along with the the Metro Birmingham Branch of the NAACP, offered free chess lessons to area students. "If you think chess is for nerds, then you'd better start calling Will Smith and Jamie Foxx nerds because they are huge chess fans" Smith said. As part of Magic City Chess U's "Changing Lives One Mind at a Time" initative, students in grades four through eight received free chess lessons today and learned about its many benefits -- some that may just qualify them as "nerds."
