As the ranking minority member on the Senate Judiciary Committee, Specter said the committee eventually will call on Goodell to explain why he had the tapes destroyed and discuss the NFL's antitrust exemption. "I am more than willing to speak with the senator ... There are very good explanations why the tapes were destroyed by our staff—there was no purpose for them." According to Specter, the purpose of addressing the issue so close to the Super Bowl by releasing the letter Goodell sent him Thursday involved preserving the sanctity of the NFL.
