Chief executive of ComRes Andrew Hawkins said: "Overall there is the sense that Afghanistan is becoming for Gordon Brown what Iraq became for Tony Blair: more than four in ten don't understand Britain's mission, support for the British presence there is ebbing away, and a majority have responded to the (Afghan) presidential election very negatively indeed." The poll found that 63 per cent of those asked felt British troops should be withdrawn as soon as possible, and half believed that corruption in the recent Afghan election showed the war is not worth fighting.
