Lord Lawson of Blaby, the former Chancellor, had led calls, saying that he had “let parliamentary democracy down”. But Mr Bain said: "I think it would have been a bit off if Michael Martin was not given that, just because he comes from this part of Glasgow. He should be treated the same way all previous Speakers have been treated. I think it would not have been right for Michael to have been scapegoated by not being given that title in the way that other Speakers were in the past."
