On yesterday’s call, CDC officials said this case is an isolated situation driven by a unique set of circumstances, and not an indicator that vaccines cause autism. "The government has made absolutely no statement indicating that vaccines are a cause of autism ... This does not represent anything other than a very special situation and a very sad situation for the family and the child." Many of those who have argued that there is a vaccine-autism link have focused on thimerosal, a mercury-containing preservative that was formerly used in many children’s vaccines and is still used in flu shots.
