Amazement that she's actually meeting Abraham Lincoln, and how big he is compared to her as an 11-year-old.
To thank her for having him grow a beard
She's looking up at Lincoln with a tremendous sense of awe. What do you think she's feeling?
Good for her ... She should have been able to vote when she was old enough.
This is the Lincoln-Bedell Park with a statue, a bronze statue of Abraham Lincoln and Grace Bedell as a little girl in 1860 here in Westfield ... And this commemorates that meeting between Lincoln and the little girl.
It clearly showed Abraham lincoln without a beard, and so Grace was able to see what the man looked like, and thought, a little bony, a little thin.
This was probably six months later that he'd stopped on his way through, and he got off the train and said, 'Is the little girl who wrote me about my whiskers here?' She was pushed up through the crowd and she had a bouquet of roses to give him, forgot the roses, and met the president.
She thought he'd look a little better with a beard on.
He received the letter and wrote her back on October 19th, 1860.
And he won (the election.)
