When Lang was 16, he auditioned for Ling, then resident conductor of the Cleveland Orchestra and music director of the Florida Orchestra. "It amazed me how he already had the maturity of a seasoned performer" Ling recalls. “He had a large repertoire at his fingertips – he told me he could play 32 different concertos.” Ling was the first to offer him concerto appearances with the Cleveland and Florida orchestras.
