Southall told the Daily Post: "Ryan Giggs has all the essentials necessary to be manager of Wales" “He has a very good footballing brain and he’s seen everything, whether good or bad, that the game can throw at you.” “Managing at international level is different from club management and his reputation would be his biggest asset in working for the Football Association of Wales, but he’s worked with some of the best coaches around and he has probably had more experience of playing in Europe than anyone who has ever managed Wales, including Mark Hughes and John Toshack.” “He’s seen at first hand what it takes to win in European competition, the tactics that are necessary depending on whether the team is at home or away and I’m sure that people like Sir Alex Ferguson and Hughes would only ever be a phone call away if advice was needed.” “All the trophies Ryan has won are no guarantee that he would be a success, but I’m sure he could emulate the likes of Jurgen Klinsmann, who did so well when he took charge of Germany.” “Hughes didn’t have any managerial experience when he became Wales manager and he has turned out to be very good at the job.” “I can see Ryan being equally successful because he thinks deeply about the game, he is very focused and he is dedicated to getting the best out of himself every time he puts his boots on.” “He would demand the same from his players and he would command respect from them as well because of what he has achieved in the game.” “Having said that, the youngsters coming through under John Toshack might be ready to qualify in a couple of years time and should that be the case it would be very unfair on the present manager to deny him the opportunity to reap the rewards of the past six years or so.”
