The Belgian has overtaken Jan Peter Balkenende, the Dutch Prime Minister, as the Brussels corridor favourite, with officials saying that he is the easiest candidate for all the EU's big three of Germany, France and Britain to live with. "Angela Merkel and Nicolas Sarkozy have agreed he can do it. Unlike with previous Belgian candidates, Gordon Brown is not opposed and Britain can have the foreign job if it wants it" said an official close to negotiations.
