ALCOA Australia will lay off about 150 workers, with 90 of those jobs to be scrapped from its Geelong operations, as the global financial crisis hits global demand and the strong Australian dollar erodes profitability.

The Australian Workers Union (AWU) is angry about Alcoa's plans to slash one-sixth of its Australian workforce. Alcoa Australia Rolled Products will sack 150 workers from its Geelong and Sydney plants.

The EC’s decision, which was not based on a complaint by a competitor or any third-party, will effectively shut down Italian aluminum production and make the European aluminum industry less competitive in the worldwide markets. Alcoa will appeal the decision and take immediate action to improve the profitability of our smelter operations.
