Banks bounce on NAMA legislation

STOCKS rose in Ireland and globally as speculation grew that central banks would keep interest rates near record lows. Allied Irish closed up 3.8 cent, or 2.3pc, at €1.74 while Bank of Ireland finished up 1c, or 0.5pc, at €1.70.

Hotels and guesthouses turn away customers

Among the worst affected was the five star Kingsley Hotel on the Carrigrohane Road. Its ground floor, which contains bars, restaurant and function rooms, was destroyed along with the extensive leisure centre.

Blasphemy law unlikely to come into force this year

THE CONTROVERSIAL new law on blasphemy has still not come into force, more than four months after President Mary McAleese enacted the Defamation Bill. The law makes the publication or utterance of blasphemous matter a crime punishable by a €25,000 fine.
