Shaul Mofaz performed the same maneuver last week when he presented his diplomatic plan. Apparently he realized, just as Ariel Sharon realized in the 2003 campaign, that in order to win the premiership one needs to break to the Left.

Mofaz meets with Egyptian ambassador over peace plan

MK Shaul Mofaz (Kadima) met with Egyptian Ambassador to Israel Yasser Reda in his Ramat Gan office to present him with his proposed peace plan. Mofaz has recently met with ambassadors from the US, Russia, and Turkey.

The biggest danger for Israel is a binational state ... In 15 years, there could be an Arab majority between the Jordan River and Mediterranean Sea. Time doesn't play into our hands. Our generation's leaders have a responsibility to fix the problem. I don't want my grandson to have to do it.
