View Photo »You know, I learned a long time ago, especially when I played baseball in Japan, you've got to slide that ego away every now and then

When two teams are playing like that, one of them is going home ... Last year it was Tampa. This year it’s us. But we’re going to be back.
Judging by the first two games, the only guy who can beat the Phillies in the National League Division Series is Charlie Manuel.
I'm not thinking about his feelings ... I'm not a feelings guy. You guys might think I'm a feelings guy. I'm not. . . . If I thought dropping Howard down in the lineup would win the game for us, I'd do it. But he's been there that long, and I don't want to go doing it on the day of the sixth game of the...
My goal is to pitch in five games before the playoffs ... That's my goal. I think [manager Charlie Manuel and pitching coach Rich Dubee] are going to be content with that. It would be hard for them to just give me the ball in the playoffs without me showing them I could do that.
What kind of message do I send to Howard after three years he's been in the Big Leagues, three or four, all of a sudden on a big important game in the World Series I drop him? ... You know, what am I going to do, call him in and say, ‘Ryan, I'm hitting you fifth or sixth tonight because this is the sixt...

It's there's any problem, I'll take him outta the game ... But I'm gonna watch him in BP andn when he warms up and everything.
He's been there. What kind of message do I send to Howard . . . all of a sudden on a big important game in the World Series, I drop him? . . . What's that telling him?
He don't like for you to say a whole lot of things about him ... But he's one of the most prepared, one of the most dedicated, he has the most desire and passion to play the game that I've ever been around. I used to say Kirby Puckett was my favorite player. The only thing Kirby might have on Chase is h...
Chase Utley has what I call a low-maintenance swing ... Actually, he's got an ideal swing. He's a rhythm, balance hitter, and that's where his power comes from. He's like a Billy Williams or Ernie Banks — a wiry guy — a Frank Robinson.
You probably say, well, CC Sabathia can do it
You're asking Cliff Lee to do something that he never did before ... We're also asking him to do it in a very big, important place, and that's in the World Series. I didn't have to think very long at all about that, and neither did [pitching coach Rich] Dubee.
This was tough, because it's the World Series
You're asking Cliff Lee to do something he has never did before . . . , in a very big, important place -- and that's in the World Series ... I didn't have to think very hard about that at all.

I thought about it and talked a little about with (pitching coach Rich Dubee), but not really because of where he's at ... Two years ago, he came off an injury and last year when he won the Cy Young he was just getting back. Plus, he has (265) innings and used a whole lot of energy. Plus, he's never don...

I felt like whoever won the Series, I felt that team was going to kind of hit a lot and score a lot of runs ... The pitching has been what you call World Series, or playoff, pitching, because they get ahead of the hitters and they put the ball exactly where they've been wanting it.
I want to keep Happ right now in the bullpen ... He could come in the middle innings. Joe has pitched in the World Series and has a little more experience.
Andy Pettitte, he’s a lot like anybody else who ages — his stuff is kind of starting to dwindle down
