Morgan Richard Tsvangirai (English IPA: /ˈtʃɑːŋgəˈraɪ/; Shona IPA: [ts͡ɸaŋgiˈra.i]), born March 10, 1952) is a trade unionist, human rights activist, and President of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), the majority party in Zimbabwe. On the 29th of March 2008, Tsvangirai contested the Zimbabwean presidential elections against three other contestants who included the incumbent, Robert Mugabe. On the 2nd of April 2008, Tsvangirai's MDC party released its set of results meant to back their claim of an outright victory by Tsvangirai, suggesting he had 51.7% of the vote.. The announcement of the presidential results, delayed by over a month, showed Tsvangirai winning 47.9% of the votes cast against Robert Mugabe's 43%, necessitating a run-off vote against incumbent Robert Mugabe. Tsvangirai and the MDC contested these results but have agreed to take part in the run-off to be held on the 27th of June 2008.
