The deal could make sense. While Google Talk is among Google’s many free offerings, the on-line chatting service is not set up to call specific phone numbers, and both parties in a call must have the Google Talk client running for it to work. Full Article at San Diego Union-Tribune

We've acquired a number of small companies over the past five years, and the people and technology that have come to Google from other places have contributed in many ways, large and small, to all kinds of Google products ... Gizmo5 is a good fit with a number of Google products. Google Talk allows voice calls between users but has no PSTN link to allow incoming or outbound calls to real phones. Gizmo5 does this well already… This looks to me like Gizmo5 will be the glue that puts Google Voice and Google Talk together into a...
Google Voice has claimed for itself a significant advantage over its competitors by openly flaunting the FCC’s call-blocking prohibition
Google Voice works with mobile phones, desk phones, work phones, and VoIP lines. There's nothing to download, upload, or install, and you don't have to make or take calls using a computer.
Clearly Google Voice does things like a telecommunications provider
They talk about [the] significant percentage of the traffic Google Voice subscribers [generate] to these kinds of services
Google hints at the prospect of going global with Google Voice. Google says it has signed contracts with a number of 'international service providers for inputs to Google Voice.' It goes on to say that 'none of the contracted services have yet' been launched.
In our response today to the FCC's inquiry about Google Voice, we announced that our engineers have developed a tailored solution for restricting calls to specific numbers engaged in what some have called high-cost 'traffic pumping' schemes, like adult chat and 'free' conference call lines.
Google Voice now restricts calls to fewer than 100 specific phone numbers, all of which we have good reason to believe are engaged in traffic pumping schemes
Google Voice is not a telecommunications service under the Federal Communications Act
We noticed an extremely high number of calls were being made to an extremely small number of destinations ... To prevent these schemes from exploiting the free nature of Google Voice making it harder for us to offer this new service to users we began restricting calls to certain telephone number prefixe...
We told the FCC today that Google Voice now restricts calls to fewer than 100 specific phone numbers, all of which we have good reason to believe are engaged in traffic pumping schemes
As a free service, Google Voice is predicated on the ability to manage operating costs aggressively. The vast majority of outbound calls to phone numbers in the United States can be terminated at reasonable costs, which allows Google Voice to provide free forwarding to US numbers and free calls to those...
Google Voice is costly to operate, and it's free from Google ... That's not a great business model for most companies -- pay out lots of expenses and make no revenue -- but for Google, it makes sense in its long-term advertising plans.
Many people don't want to change their numbers to use Google Voice
I make many calls during the day, and I have only received the Google Voice prompt for a total of two reporter calls ... My sense is it's not widely adopted, at least not for real business purposes.
Google Voice is all about enabling choice
We see this as a perfect step for getting familiar with Google Voice without a lot of change
We're not replacing your existing telephone line ... Google Voice doesn't do anything unless you have a phone line.
Holy crap. It seems that Google is going to have some pretty serious explaining to do this morning, as one of our readers has sent us in a tip that reveals a major security flaw involving Google Voice
If, as Google claims, it is allowed to block whichever Google Voice calls it wants and the FCC is powerless to stop it, then Google also can block whichever Internet sites, applications, services or content that it wants and the FCC cannot do anything about that either.
Google’s practice of blocking Google Voice calls demonstrates exactly why any open Internet principles must also apply evenhandedly to providers of Internet applications, content and services
