After an emotional first meeting with Myanmar democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said Monday that more steps towards reform probably will ease U.S. and Western sanctions against that Southeast Asian nation
Some people in government now, who used to be very high officers in the military, also began to see the need for change
The United States has been very impressed with the changes that are occurring. I am also convinced based on our conversations with Aung San Suu Kyi that these are real changes and the country is heading in the right direction
Elements in the government genuinely desire reform … If we will wait only for solid guarantees, we can never proceed. We have to take risks. We have to take the courage to face a future that is not really known to us
Hillary Clinton and Aung San Suu Kyi are right to test the regime's intentions. But for now, keep your eye on the political prisoners and the regime's dangerous relationship with North Korea.
There has to be enough progress in those directions for us to be sure the reforms will keep going forward and not regress ... What we have to do is make sure no one can put a stop to the reform process. We all have to cooperate to make sure it goes forward.
She will underscore our commitment not only to working closely with the government, with Aung San Suu Kyi, but a desire to have a dialogue with the ethnic minorities, with a deep recognition that it's those issues that are at the core, at the very heart of the difficulties that Myanmar has faced for ove...
I will certainly run for the elections when they take place
She comes with some specific ideas and suggestions for how we can support the process. She will have specific ideas that she will roll out in each of her meetings, both with the government, with the parliamentarians, with Aung San Suu Kyi, also with the ethnic groups, and also with civil society
I think we have to be prepared to take risk. Nothing is guaranteed
the Burmese government’s recent democratic reforms are easily reversible at any time ... remind the Burmese government of the consequences that will follow from a failure to cooperate with Aung San Suu Kyi, ethnic nationality leaders, and all stakeholders of Burma’s democracy movement.
We hope that they are meaningful
Aung San Suu Kyi is critical [for the government] because they need her. She is the regime's passport to legitimacy and that is a very powerful weapon for her
I think the United States has got it just right
President Thein Sein and the Burmese Parliament have taken important steps on the path toward reform ... A dialogue between the government and Aung San Suu Kyi has begun. The government has released some political prisoners. Media restrictions have been relaxed. And legislation has been approved that co...
I haven't changed my mind on sanctions
We covered a range of issues in Burma, including recent encouraging developments such as the release of some political prisoners and the creation of the national human rights commission ... Aung San Suu Kyi has always been a tremendously inspirational figure when it comes to the promotion of human right...
I hope to run for parliament
Aung San Suu Kyi informed me that she believes the number of political prisoners remaining in detention is probably around 600, although there may be others her party is not aware of ... I join her in her desire to see all political prisoners released in the very near future.
The government of Thein Sein sincerely wants to find a fair and durable peace which covers all the ethnic group's concerns
Not only do they have a government which wants reforms but they've got somebody incredibly respected like Aung San Suu Kyi.
Our people have been living in the dark for more than 50 years. It is good that the sun has come up. However, if we are unable to prevent continued inequality and discrimination, another eclipse is bound to come.
Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has been working quite closely with the present government, especially with the president ... If Daw Aung San Suu Kyi trusts the present government enough, maybe they can also.
