We're having last-minute discussions
It was a huge opportunity missed
Any agreement has to meet two tests: One, it has to do something for jobs and the economy -- the American people are hurting, we need to do something to get the economy going, that also helps to reduce the deficit
No person could look at that (alternative plan) and say it met the test of fairness and balance
Certainly as you get to the midnight hour, pressure goes up
We’re looking at whatever approach we take, it needs to meet the test of being balanced, and it needs to have a jobs component
We need to find out whether our Republican colleagues want to continue to negotiate or whether they've drawn a hard line in the sand
The question is whether they’ve said, ‘Take it or leave it,’ and don’t want to negotiate
The question is whether they've kind of said 'take it or leave it.'
I think at this stage you have people trying to explore all the different avenues that might be able to bridge the differences. We’ll have to see if we’ll get there, but people are making that effort every day
No. 1, I’m not sure that a big deal is out of reach. [But] No. 2, the idea would be to come up with a package that was, of course, preferable, to the sequester. Measured against the sequester, there are lots of better outcomes
we have yet to see a proposal that meets two basic standards: One, it does something for the economy and jobs, and two, is a balanced approach
It looks like these guys are giving up and throwing in the towel
