View Photo »He's a horse that can overcome ... He's a great athlete and a great horse, which is half the battle.
We need a lot of luck ... But we have the horse.
He’s the kind of horse that there’s not an ounce of fat on him ... I mean he’s very athletic and he’s cut. He’s not a big, heavy horse where I have to do a lot with him. So he’s pretty fit.
We want the horses that fit with our program, and those are the kind that can run and win big races
He almost had a Kentucky Derby-type experience getting bounced around ... I wanted him to do what he did today. Except for him almost falling down, he did well. It's not me. It's the horse. It's like a coach with a great player.
This is as close as you can get to Churchill Downs. It's nice to run on dirt. Then you know what you have
When he makes the lead, he sort of shuts it down
He doesn't need a lot, this horse ... He stays pretty fit. This race will help him a lot.
This is going to be an experimental race
That's what we're there for
We have a lot of questions that have to be answered ... wearing blinkers for the first time in a race and running on dirt for the first time. The closer you get to the Kentucky Derby (May 1), the better off you are knowing the answers.
We have a lot of questions that have to be answered ... wearing blinkers for the first time in a race and running on dirt for the first time. The closer you get to the Kentucky Derby (May 1), the better off you are knowing the answers.
He's a good chef, too ... He loves to cook.
I didn't want Martin beating me
I've been molding him ... He's become like my stable rider. He's a nice kid and pretty smart. He wants to be No. 1. But he's not cocky. If I see him make a mistake on a horse, he listens to me. He really wants to learn. I've never had a jockey who works as hard as him.
He's been riding with a lot of confidence ... He's earned all those mounts.
I'm going to have to buy a house there
I'm glad it came off the turf
Last time I was so disappointed when he got beat, and I think we just figured out that we just need to let him roll
He's a nice kid and he's a smart little rider ... He wants to be No. 1, and I like that in him. I can tell him things. If I see him make a mistake, I'll pull him aside and tell him I didn't like what he did and he'll listen to me and say, `Thank you, very much. OK, I'll work on that.' He can really fini...
That was after the first time I took Jill skiing
I bet this is the first time in the history of the Santa Anita Handicap ... that the winning owners actually needed the money.
Last time, I was so disappointed ... You've got to let him roll. He's got one speed. He really dug in and the mile and a quarter was not a problem for him. This horse had to run big. He didn't have any excuses. He showed today he's a good horse.
We know what he can do here [on a synthetic surface] ... The Rebel would be his first race on dirt. And he would be shipping for the first time.
The sooner (synthetic tracks) are gone, the better ... They didn’t perform like they were supposed to, and they need a lot of maintenance. It’s something we’ve all been struggling with.
