I should start off by thanking Ryan Lochte ... I owe him ... something after the meet.
I wasn’t focused on the world record or anything ... I was just focused on racing tough. I knew I had it in my sight, but I think all the races I had this week kind of tired me out a bit. But I put up a really good time, and I’m really happy.
I wanted to prove to everyone it wasn't a fluke
I just wanted to prove to everyone that it could happen
I wasn't really focused on getting the world record, I was just focusing on swimming tough
I wanted to prove to everyone that [my victory] wasn't a fluke at nationals ... I was kind of disappointed. He's a good friend of mine and I love racing the guy. It stinks he wasn't swimming it.
I wanted to prove to everyone it wasn't a fluke at nationals
Everyone said we wouldn't see world records
I was kind of upset, I was actually looking forward to racing him again in the 200 IM
I think I hit it all the time when I'm outside ... There's some reason I'm looking up at the sky and I lose it. I go off in my own world.
I felt I could have gone maybe a half a second faster if I didn't hit that lane line ... I was focusing the whole race on not hitting the lane line. And what do I do at the very end of the race? I hit it.
I felt pretty in control. I tried to hold back on my first 50 ... I was trying to stay in the middle but it didn't work. I probably could've gone a half-second faster if I hadn't hit that. I had a big enough lead where it really didn't affect me.
Before the race, I told those guys to give me a 10-second lead (on the anchor) because I'm going to need it ... It wasn't that bad. I thought it would be a lot harder to recover.
I just went out fast and tried to hold on for dear life ... I'm just going out there, having fun and racing. Whatever the outcome is, I'll take it.
I told them before the race to give me the biggest lead possible because I'm going to need it ... I'm lucky I had clean water.
The second 50, I saw (Park), and I knew if I was even with him at the 100, I could take it ... It felt good. I’ve done the training, and I’m just going to keep doing what I’m doing.
I feel pretty good and I've done the training ... I have a lot more events coming up during this meet. I'm just going to go back and keep doing what I'm doing.
I knew if I was there at the 100, I could take it ... I didn't have the 100 back after, so I just wanted to race the best I could.
Maybe. I feel good, I've done the training. I'm just going to go back and keep doing what I'm doing.
It’s great ... I love racing him.
I wanted to get stronger in the water ... I wanted to pull more water with every stroke.
I almost broke my world record in the 200 IM ... It can be done. I'm hoping [this] week. It's just a matter of time.
I knew I had to go out fast and just hold on for dear life
It feels great ... I’ve been trying (to beat Phelps) for a long time. To finally get a win feels good.
