Matt Flynn looks to be the flavor of the month, having been groomed in the high powered Green Bay offensive system and fresh off a record breaking performance against Detroit in week 17. The list gets pretty pedestrian after Flynn with Jason Campbell,...
While my money is on Jackson re-signing with the Chargers, the 49ers will definitely be in the game if he bolts the Bolts. Multiple reports indicate that the San Francisco 49ers plan on bringing in a couple new weapons for Alex Smith in the passing game.
In order to keep the core of the team intact they have several free agents on their roster that they’ll need to bring back, most notably Alex Smith, Dashon Goldson, Carlos Rogers and Joshua Morgan. However, free agency will open up in March, and that’s...
Only unrestricted free agents can be franchise-tagged. That is, NFLers with at least four years of experience. Restricted free agents — players with three years experience — cannot be. Quarterbacks set to become UFAs on March 15 include New Orleans’...
And that bidding is expected to go quickly. And that bidding needs to be done by the 49ers. Unlike San Diego, San Francisco has a excellent rushing attack, knows how to play consistent defense and has a better head coach in Jim Harbaugh. Alex Smith may...
The 49ers were two muffed punts away from a shot at winning a sixth Super Bowl championship. The team exceeded everyone's expectations with a strong defense and a head coach, Jim Harbaugh, who instilled confidence in the much-maligned quarterback, Alex...
Combine is right around the corner and draft season is in full swing, to be sure. The most popular position of need being discussed with regards to our beloved 49ers is wide receiver (WR). Most of us feel that if we had a "stud" WR on the roster we...
Behind Brees, Alex Smith might be the most popular quarterback this offseason after he played a big role in helping the San Francisco 49ers reach the NFC Championship match. Alex Smith had to go through a lot of obstacles to get to where he is now. ...
In an expected change of pace, the 49ers introduced their offense, rather than their highly touted defense, in the pregame ceremonies. It’s not that this hadn’t been done before, but typically the final player introduced is a fan favorite — in the...
I’m not quite as ready to conclude that teams with great defenses and so-so quarterbacks can’t win a championship. Baltimore and San Francisco came ever so close to meeting in the Super Bowl and they were teams built on defense and had quarterbacks who...
(SI) The San Francisco 49ers raised the bar for this division with a shocking resurgence in 2011. The challenge for them now is to maintain that level of excellence, and that puts some pressure on the few decisions they have to make before free agency...
San Francisco 49ers exited from the NFL playoffs in the NFC Championship Game at the hands of the New York Giants. The Niners were in the game and held a lead for a while, but their offense just couldn't get a whole lot going, especially passing the...
San Francisco 49ers are coming off a storybook season under head coach Jim Harbaugh, finishing 13-3 and making the playoffs for the first time since 2002. Harbaugh was named Coach of the Year and quarterback Alex Smith, a former No. 1 overall pick who...
Let’s begin with what I consider to be the most obvious. (To the incredulous ones out there: Yes, I am putting my complete trust in the quarterback once destined for football purgatory.) During a year in which a proper offseason program failed to...
Beyond pulled out when analyzing Tim Tebow. Insight #1: When Tebow wins he’s a hero, and when he loses, he’s a fraud. Maybe not that surprising to Tebow followers. However, given this popular sentiment, the question then becomes does the same hold true...
Smith has caused me to feel many different emotions over the last several years. Anger, frustration and confusion come to mind. However, the other night I experienced a completely unique feeling regarding the 49ers’ quarterback. It began after I...
Smith had his best season in his career in leading the 49ers to a 13-3 regular-season record and the NFC Championship Game. The team has been open about its intent to re-sign Smith, who is an unrestricted free agent. “We’re all in lockstep as an...
Brown getting banged up seems to alter people’s perception of reality. And goldson would have been able to see brown going for the ball better than brown could have seen goldson. They were both looking back at the ball and since goldson was behind,...
Bringing in Manning would be a smart decision if this franchise has the ambition to compete with the best in the game. Pros: The 49ers went to the NFC Championship game last year without an elite quarterback. Alex Smith had a good season, but has...
San Francisco 49ers Santa Clara, Calif. , leaders have approved plans for a new stadium , which would be completed in time for the 2014 season. Grant Cohn examines quarterback Alex Smith's top five strengths and weaknesses. Seattle Seahawks Seahawks...

View Photo »It's about as good as it gets ... There were so many ups and downs in this game.
Would have been a cool matchup, 49ers vs. Packers, Alex Smith vs. Aaron Rodgers. But visiting Green Bay in late January? You can't even get there. Did you see the story last week where a U.S. Coast Guard icebreaker had to clear a path for a Russian fuel tanker to reach an iced-in Nome, Alaska? That's ho...
No, no I don't. That's not why I play, that's not why I ever played. I don't have anything to say.
The 49ers have played extremely well all year. They have rushed the ball, have played outstanding defense and their quarterback (Alex Smith) came up with huge plays in the game to help his team win. We are looking forward to digging in and preparing for the 49ers
As soon as I saw ]the coverage]
Can Alex Smith and the 49ers offense score enough points to win?
If the window was there, I was going to cut it loose
I sent [offensive tackle] Joe Staley a text, I said, ‘Nice wheels on the cut block you had for [quarterback] Alex Smith when he scored [on the touchdown run].’ Things like that
I knew it was going to be a bang-bang play and that you were going to have to get it in there ... It wasn't going to be a lob ball.
Alex Smith is a giant steaming pile of crap who can't lead the 49ers from behind.
Embattled quarterback Alex Smith had to wait almost seven years, but he's finally playing like a first-round draft pick, and he out Drew Brees-ed Drew Brees during the final four minutes of Saturday's Divisional game
He got a little emotional on us on offense and got after us a little bit ... Great to see him come out in the second half and really just stay patient.
He is not Joe Montana. He is not Steve Young. But he is good enough to have the San Francisco 49ers where they haven't been since the 1997 playoffs, which means maybe it's time to re-evaluate Alex Smith. Because without him the 49ers aren't where they are now, and where they are is in their first NFC Ch...
Being a San Francisco guy, I've seen the ups and downs in the past with Alex Smith. Not only am I, but the city of San Francisco is proud of what happened. His success is leading us to the next level each week.
And what Jim has done with the 49ers is really remarkable, because people didn't think this was a good team... he has a quarterback who people have written off as a bust. But Jim Harbaugh has gotten everything he can out of Alex Smith. He's a very smart coach, and a very good inspirer of men.
I don’t want this to end ... I don’t think anyone does in this locker room because it’s been such a great year.
Guys were so confident, as long as we had time we had a shot
Any time you play a division opponent, it means that much more
