I wish I had lived in the Twenties and been able to make silent comedy
Thank you very much to Alexander Payne, who makes wonderful films and is a great friend
I kind of do still have that fear of straight drama ... But I didn’t feel it making this film. Maybe because I treated this drama as though I were a comedy director, and if there was an opportunity for laughs without undercutting the drama, I would take it. And maybe also because I am happy as I’m agein...
I was a big Cameron Crowe fan, and a huge Hal Ashby fan. And in the nineties, there was the Sundance moment that gave birth to Alexander Payne and Paul Thomas Anderson and Wes Anderson and Quentin and Sofia, who made me want to be a director, but they’re coming three generations after Wilder.
And then, probably in about two years’ time, I’ll return to [Downsizing] ... Hopefully, it’ll have been ageing gracefully.
Alexander Payne has been gone so long, it's easy to forget just how good he is. With ‘The Descendants,’ the director's first feature since 2004's 'Sideways,' he reminds us what we've been missing.
You can make any case you like ... But my impetus for choosing that yodeling song was to have something ridiculous and grating accompanying the protagonist's confusion and alienation.
Alexander Payne understands the importance of every part, no matter how small
For such a small area, there's an intimidating amount to learn about their tremendous musical heritage
Alexander Payne never deserved to be uttered in the same breath with us. 50/50 really came from the same mindset and creative attitude as Superbad and Pineapple Express
There was no also-ran for me among the 200 or so gals we looked at for that part -- acting chops, emotional power, the strength and the vulnerability ... I hope other people see what I saw. You watch her turn from churlish and rebellious and angry into her father's teammate. Amazing.
I watch movies all the time, like ‘The Descendents,’ for example, Alexander Payne’s new film. It really does have an environmental component to it that isn’t overt at all. It’s an appropriate dollop of environmentalism
Hawaii is not my world, and I don’t understand that world
It’s surreal... It’s crazy. The entire experience of filming in Hawaii with [director] Alexander Payne and George Clooney was amazing.
I just don’t want it to be ... too heartwarming.
I'm so fortunate ... Alexander Payne and George Clooney, every time I'm around them I'm constantly observing how to be a better person.
But he’s just midwifed one death ... And he does not want to midwife another.
I thought it would be fun to explore that. And I thought that it would be fun to explore that with Alexander Payne because if I was bad he would make me good
Of course he wants to kill the guy, but this is the right thing to do — an act of love ... I thought that was beautiful, and it intrigued me: Love when you don’t want to, love when it’s very difficult. That’s what made me want to do it.
