I had teams telling me that they'd sign me for this or that they weren't going to sign me, and I found myself having to talk my way out of going to certain places ... I felt like, if I went deeper in the draft, as backward as it was, teams were willing to sign me for more money. It was a game of trying ...
The way some players look at it is, they haven't made it, they haven't earned it yet ... But a lot of players benefited from that system.
It was something they really wanted to take care of, to adjust and change ... We had to be real creative to find a way to please them and yet to please our constituency, too.
You hated seeing the years when a player had worked so hard to become a free agent, had done so well, and, if it's a relief pitcher, teams don't want to give up draft compensation to sign that kind of a player ... You spend your career working so hard to get to that point, and your value is lowered due ...
