This was the major Chinese-American civil rights case in the last 30 years ... And there was a feeling among many Chinese-Americans, particularly in Silicon Valley, that Bill Richardson did a lot to promote the notion that all Chinese-Americans are potential spies.
Bill Richardson is an outstanding choice to lead the Department of Commerce, the Department most closely associated with America's ocean policy. Given the many serious problems currently facing our oceans, we hope and expect Governor Richardson to be a champion for the health of our oceans ... Too often NOAA has been as afterthought at the Commerce Department. We believe Governor Richardson can change that. Clearly, he is aware the ocean supplies the air we breathe and the food we eat. We trust he will put defending this all important resource at the front of his agenda, where it belongs.
I think it speaks volumes ... about him as a person, and the confidence he has in himself and his ability to govern. Obviously he is not afraid to surround himself with competent people like Hillary Clinton, Bill Richardson and even Joe Biden who are going to be able to assist him.
He wasn't an Andy Young, he wasn't a Richard Holbrooke, and he wasn't a Tom Pickering. But he was a great Bill Richardson. He was so astonishingly friendly. Very often, countries heed the positions of the U.S. ambassadors because they feel they have no choice. So it's that much more palatable if those policies are put forward in an agreeable way by a bonhomous U.S. ambassador.
It's time to not just address our immediate economic threats, but to start laying the groundwork for long-term economic prosperity -- to help American businesses grow and thrive at home, and expand our efforts to promote American enterprise around the world

I'm sure he would love to be secretary of state, no matter what he says about staying in the governorship ... And he wouldn't get criticized. He's got a Democratic lieutenant governor who is off and running and he could leave a couple of years early and she'd have incumbency for the general election in 2010. Will he be picked? Who knows.
I'd say the odds are that I'll be back dealing with you guys and the Legislature.
