I used to think of Billy Wilder primarily as a very witty, literate screenwriter who made sophisticated, Lubitsch-like films. But re-watching Sunset Boulevard and Stalag 17 recently, I was reminded again of how hard-edged Wilder’s sense of humour is. Full Article at Jabberwock

It seemed like a Billy Wilder movie in a way, with Matt as Jack Lemmon ... I enjoy making the Ocean films because it is a justifiable way of playing with the camera, but in a movie like this, my job is to let the performance take position front and centre, just be simple.

The original 1936-37 Ashes series is pretty good, but I think I prefer the Billy Wilder version from 1963 with Bill Lawry as Stan McCabe.
