The 3-1 victory over Shrewsbury in the first round was great for us because they are doing so well in League Two but, obviously, Blackburn Rovers will be another matter altogether, with lads here who earn between £100 and £200 a game coming up against players who are on £50,000 a week.
There appears to be an interest [in Santa Cruz from City], but there is no confirmed bid from them ... It would be reasonable to say we expect to hear from them. Mark Hughes brought him to this club and if he’s struggling for a striker, he’ll be interested. But it would only be at the right price for Blackburn Rovers if we decide we want to sell him. It’s in their hands to make the first approach.
I used to watch Spartans with my oldest mate Paccers all the time as a kid ... I remember thousands turning out for a cup tie one night against Bromsgrove Rovers but I was only four in 1978 so the Blackburn match is the biggest for me. I knew Paul [Guerin, THE QUIREBOYS guitarist] was a Spartans fanatic so I made a few calls and THE QUIREBOYS were well up for it.
It’s no fluke, though, I can tell you, and the trick is now to stay there. Clubs with tradition and history are down at the bottom so it’s great for a club like us, with our resources, to be punching above our weight. Bolton have done it before and Blackburn Rovers. So why not us?
Let's be fair, if one of those top four or a top club do come in for him I'm sure the club will make the right decision on what is best for Blackburn Rovers
I attribute my fantastic success to the fact that my squad contains no Blackburn Rovers players.
He’s now got a bit of time to think about it and he will think about it deeply. As he always has done in his life, he will come up with the right decision. I’ve definitely not given up on it and Alan’s not said anything to my knowledge that suggests he doesn’t want to do it. I think deep down he does.
The door is left absolutely wide open. It’s up to Alan and me to come up with the right solution for him coming in here. I’ve left the door wide open because I respect him and know that he would bring something to the party.
