When they did their deal and sold to Boston Ventures, Chad [McCumbee] was going to drive the second car and Bobby [Labonte] was going to drive the first car; they pretty much let me know there wasn't a place for me there going into '09. My deal runs out at the end of the year, but I don't go over there [to the shop in Mooresville, N.C.] because I don't work there. 
Joe Gibbs Racing has had a lot of success at Atlanta beginning with Bobby Labonte, so I feel real good about this weekend ... Kyle did the tire test, so all three teams should have some good notes for the weekend.

Nobody's ready to throw in the towel ... The GEM (Gillett Evernham) team is strong. Penske's strong. If you look at (Petty Enterprises driver) Bobby Labonte in terms of consistency, he's like (Chevrolet Chase driver) Jeff Burton, just 7-8 places behind Burton. And we think Chip Ganassi is starting to get its act back together. So, we're not happy that we're not in the Chase. Then again, we're not freaking out.
I wasn't thinking (at the end of the 2008 season) that if I'm not here next year, it's time to scale back. I'm not ready for that. Physically and mentally, I'm in the Mark Martin mode. I want to continue being competitive and have a chance to win races and championships.
it's not what I'm geared toward. It's important to keep your name out there, but the Cup level is where it's at.
They had great intentions and meant well, but obviously they don't have 20 years of racing knowledge, either ... That hurt them some. It was emotional because in June and July, they asked me for a list of things that would help us out. We were moving forward and knocking down brick walls, and then we got to one that woke us up and said this brick wall isn't going to give anymore. Nobody saw this coming in May.
I'm optimistic something will shake out ... I know I'm ready and capable and can bring value to a team. I'm not sitting here telling you if I don't get a ride, that's fine. I'm not sleeping well at night because I don't have one.
Talks are happening, but that's not happened yet ... I feel like they've got a great program, it's just a matter of they have to put their deal together before I come into the picture.
Is it possible that this test session could be an advantage? ... I think that any experience you can get will be a premium factor in 2009. Drivers with experience can bring a little more to the team, test session or no test session. It's about the time you've spent on the track.
