When you put your 53-man roster together, you assume that injuries will happen ... They happen every year. We’re not the only team that had injuries [Sunday]. So it was the next guy up, and that’s how we look at it. When a guy goes down, you hope he doesn’t go down with a season-ending injury and we haven’t had any of those except for Brandon [McGowan]. Besides that, it’s the next guy, and that’s what we did.
Brandon McGowan is our starter, has been our starter ... He has played well at times. He has played like the rest of our defense has at other times. Missing that game last week, of course, threw him back a little bit. Payne has made a lot of progress. He brings a certain attitude to the defense. I like what he has been able to do, even though he's a young player who needs more experience. In time, he'll be a pretty good safety.
If you watch football long enough, people get hurt every week ... It's not just little knicks and bruises; we're talking about devastating injuries. It's the nature of the game we play. I don't think there is one position or player that is more susceptible.
It's an important position ... Now with all the blitzing that is done, the different schemes, you need a safety that is a good athlete and is versatile. The safety position is a spot where you have to do multiple things. You have to have skills in everything.
Whenever you lose a player, yeah, there is concern ... But we still feel like we're OK. If you really look at it, how many safeties do you play in a game? You have two starting safeties. That is what we have. We're still OK. We just can't take a lot more hits.
For one, Joey has great speed and that's going to be a big asset for us on kickoffs ... Just the fact that he's a young, new player out there and [opponents] don't really know what to expect from him, they're going to have a hard time trying to figure out what he's going to do, what he wants to do. We've got a lot of faith in Joey. He's going to make a lot of good plays for us.
