We're going to give him a few days just as a precaution
PEORIA, Ariz. He just said that he didn't like pitching there with the roof open. No matter. Padres manager Bud Black said on Tuesday that Garland is going to get a start at Chase, where the Padres open the season with a three-game series on April 5-7. Full Article at MLB.com

I don’t like our guys to shy away from anything ... The only time we might consider it is if there happens to be a matchup the last week of spring and our guy’s next turn would be against the same team. Overall, I’m not one to dodge guys.
Ariz. Almost daily, Black has been going over to the minor league side of the Padres complex and grabbing two or three players for a cameo with the major league team. Several days ago, Black took a look at 19-year-old, third base prospect Edinson... Full Article at San Diego Union-Tribune

It will be a good competition, and these guys sense it
Right is his natural side. That tells me that the raw power is a little higher from the right side even though he has power from the left side ... I think he can have good numbers right-handed.
It’s shown signs of being a viable pitch
With Chris, we’re going to be watching to see if there are any setbacks
I thought he threw the ball fine. What we were looking for was the delivery and the arm action ... I think we saw the things he was looking for.
We had some good reports on him ... For us, it wasn't a huge leap of faith. What we saw, we liked. He got his opportunity and made the most of it. At that point [in Spring Training], we realized that our bullpen was unsettled. We didn't know what direction we were going to go. It had to get us thinking ...
Well, that’s a horse of a different color, then
Where Tony is on this club, is that we need him and whoever is hitting at the top of the order to get on base ... If Tony does hit at the top of the order, that's his job. There's no secret about that. That's been the basis of baseball forever.
We've won that game a couple years ... and looked in the paper the next day and saw we were 0-0.
First game doesn't count ... I don't like that. Doesn't count in the standings. Doesn't count in the stats.
Now is the time in Chase's career where he sees himself as a Major League player ... He's not a rookie. He's not a guy who is just coming on the scene. He has been here in the big leagues. He knows what it's about. I think Chase is up to the challenge of being a solid, productive Major League player.
There is a proper way to cover first base and there are proper angles to fielding, fielding a bunt or hitting the bag ... I don't want our guys just going through the motions. We work on this stuff in Spring Training and during the course of a season, if a pitcher does not make the right play, we get re...
It just becomes part of our quality of life
If Canada wins, we’ll pitch in and buy him dinner
I saw four solid pitches ... a fastball right at 90 [mph] and I saw a curve that had some downward action to it and a functional changeup. I saw him attack the strike zone with a good ball-to-strike ratio
You don't want a younger player to shift dramatically
You don't want a young player to drastically have a big shift one way or the other ... He's still finding his way to what makes him tick the best as far as weight. He's in a good spot.
I had heard he lost 30, and you never know ... A lot of guys say, 'I lost 20 pounds,' and they look exactly the same. But it's noticeable. You have visuals of players, and he's just a little different than that visual.
We don’t think it’s anything long term
I want to instill a little more pushing of the speed component of our club
There's more of a speed element on our team now than the previous three years
We're trying to instill pushing the speed component. We want to push it more than we have in the past. You've got to test your limits
We expected him to be at this stage
He threw 120 last year and I think what he's done the last couple of years, it is prudent to watch it, whether it's in the big leagues or Minor Leagues ... As he moves into the season, we'll watch him.
