View Photo »We know vitamin D has an impact on reducing inflammatory activity and fighting infections, all of which are chronic problems in patients with COPD
COPD ranks in the top 10 causes of morbidity and mortality in the United States.
But this does not allow us to conclude that we need to give all COPD patients these high doses of vitamin D; it just strengthens us in the idea that severe deficiency many enhance inflammation in COPD
Vitamin D restoration to normal levels in COPD patients does not reduce the number of exacerbations, does not reduce the infections and inflammation
And also to assess rarer COPD outcomes such as hospitalization or deaths, or outcomes with longer latency such as changes in lung function, fractures, cardiac outcomes or lung cancer.
There are studies showing that patients with vitamin D deficiency are more susceptible to different inflammatory, infectious and autoimmune diseases, and most likely COPD
Variability in the underlying disease and genetics are likely to modify the respiratory responses to vitamin D supplementation in people with COPD
Secondhand smoke has been proven to be dangerous in a number of instances. Eliminating exposure to secondhand smoke is important for many people with chronic pulmonary (lung) problems, such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
This mechanism appears to explain one of the reasons that inflammation in COPD just never resolves despite stopping smoking
Right now there's no evidence that patients with COPD are going to benefit from additional vitamin D.
That would indicate that if there's any effect, there might be something in patients with really low levels. That's not the majority of patients with COPD
It is again clear for COPD patients that these exacerbations are really hard to treat
Severe deficiency of vitamin D levels ... may even increase the COPD exacerbation rate and needs therefore aggressive supplementation
Be aware that vitamin D deficiency is prevalent in COPD and that it needs supplementation for bone health reasons
Market and Product Forecasts: COPD - Growth expected despite untapped market potential

Maybe we don't see smoking as being as important as alcohol and drug addiction, but I'm a pulmonologist and I see chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), emphysema and lung cancer every day ... And we know tobacco smoke is linked to cardiovascular disease and stroke. It's one of the most preventab...

It is not enough to have heard of COPD. Those at risk need to know the signs so they can talk to their health care provider about any breathing problems they are having and, hopefully, find relief
COPD is surpassing other diseases as a major killer in this country. We want to reverse this trend by educating people about the symptoms, so they can get proper treatment as early as possible
This pollution causes a long list of diseases, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and chest sensitivity at best, and respiratory failure at worst.
There are other advantages as well. Many patients are unable to lie down on a flat surface for a variety of medical reasons, and a recumbent-only MRI is out of the question. These are patients that have spinal deformities, vertigo or COPD. Considering the powerful image quality that the scanner has, thi...
