View Photo »This is what I say. I, Charlie Chaplin, declare that Hollywood is dying. It is no longer concerned with film-making, which is supposed to be an art, but solely with turning out miles of celluloid.
I'm a great admirer of all the film comics and slapstick artists, from Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton and Laurel and Hardy to Abbott and Costello, The Three Stooges and Lucille Ball ... What I want in this show is some of that physical comedy, with a raw, authentic, not-so-polished quality.
My impression is there have been more and more celebrity memoirs over the years and, along with that, a lowering of how substantial a celebrity you have to be ... It used to be that you had to be someone like Charlie Chaplin, who was the greatest movie star of his time. Or a golfer like Bobby Jones. And...
He was fascinated by the idea of geniuses, from Alexander the Great to Charlie Chaplin and Muhammad Ali, but he didn’t consider himself as one of them. He was very humble. He saw himself as a student.
